Earplugs

Earplugs are a device designed to be inserted into the ear canal to protect your ear from loud noises. They range in size, shape, material, and color, but all do the same thing, block the noise from entering your ears.
There are three main types of earplugs, foam, silicone, and flanged earplugs.

Foam plugs are made of a memory foam that forms to the inside of your ear and then back to its original shape. These are simple to use, you roll them between your thumb and index finger to make them smaller. Then you insert them in your ear, where they expand to block loud noises.
Silicone earplugs are rolled into a ball and carefully molded to fit over the external portion of the ear canal. This provides a tight comfortable fit for the wearer. |

Flanged earplugs are the common earplugs used by musicians. They come in many different styles. Some look like a pyramid with three different levels to seal the ear, and some come custom formed to your ear. Flanged earplugs can also be "hi-fi" meaning they have an accoustic transmission line with a attenuator on the end. This allows the wearer to hear modified sounds of their choice.
For ear protection purposes, the preferred earplugs are foam. They form to your ear blocking the loud noise of gun fire. They are also the least expensive earplugs. |
